and error, and, dare I say – risk. Few institutions of higher education have
created compliance departments, and much like in Mr. Lincoln’s time, these
are the exception. 7 Loyola University Chicago School of Law is one such

Compliance Studies is producing something never before seen in law
school—graduates specifically trained to work in the field of regulatory
compliance. 8 At Loyola, a student can go beyond traditional health law; they
can enroll in classes dealing with healthcare payments, medical billing, and
research compliance. 9 A graduate of Loyola’s Law School can walk out the
door already able to complete a Medicare Coverage Analysis, analyze high
risk billing modifiers and understand the ideal structure of an Institutional
Review Board. As a student, I acquired both the theoretical, higher-level
understanding of compliance as well as the practical detail-based skills that
made me practice-ready for my internships and future employer.
In addition to excellent externship and internship opportunities, Loyola
offers students the opportunity to obtain a Certificate in Compliance along
with their J.D. This certificate compliments the Certificate in Healthcare
Compliance (CHC) students can obtain as a result of Loyola’s registration
with Compliance Certification Board. 10 Ordinarily professionals must gain
work experience surpassing a year in a compliance role and obtain over
twenty hours of approved CEU credits. 11 Students at Loyola can sit for the
exam during their legal education giving them the ability to fall into a
compliance role as soon as they graduate.
Most recently, Loyola launched its Journal of Regulatory Compliance12 at
